THE WORMS CRAWL IN

Here's every loner's nightmare come true.

A German man was fatally bitten by his pet black widow and then partially eaten by the insects and reptiles he had amassed in his apartment.

Police broke into Mark Voegel's apartment Sunday in Dortmund, Germany, after neighbors complained of the smell and were horrified when they found the 30-year-old man's body on the sofa covered in spider webs and infested with termites.

Large pieces of flesh were torn off the dead man by the lizards he kept in his bizarre insect and reptile zoo, and taken back to the webs of tarantulas and other bird-eating spiders.

Authorities said some of the spiders were so aggressive they were the equivalent of pit bulls in the animal world.

If you can stand it, click here for more on the story.

WHAT IS THIS?

Yes, I know it's a moth ... but what kind?

Last night I was futzing around on the deck and I noticed this strange-looking guy (and two of his twin siblings) hanging out on my screen door.

Now, I'm not fond of insects. I can take ladybugs, fireflies, daddy long legs and butterflies, but when it comes to moths and other creepy, crawly creatures, I'm skeeved out.

Spot here was so unusual looking that I had to take his picture. In the 11 years in the same house, I've never seen any one like this. Afterward, I Googled "black and white spotted moth with blue legs" to try to find out what kind of moth this guy is.

All to no avail. Well, actually I gave up when no moth pictures matched him in the first 20 or so Web sites I visited.

So, what kind of moth is this? Is it a rare species or is it your everyday run-of-the-mill moth? And while we're wondering ... why do they call moth balls "moth balls" when they really only repel the larvae? Why aren't they call larvae or worm balls?

CAN'T EAT JUST ONE

In your lifetime, you inadvertently will eat a pound of insects.

At least that's what I read after I found this itty bitty fly in my chicken Cesar salad. OK, so I lost my appetite. I don't do bugs.

Many people, though, do do bugs. In fact, some people eat bug doo-doo. If you don't believe me, just go online and Google "eat bugs." After I finished shuddering, this cookbook looked interesting.

I might be able to eat a fried, ground-up mealworm. I eat escargot, after all. Does that count as a bug?

It's those insects with hairy legs and wings that are difficult to swallow. Or maybe it's the fear of bug eggs hatching in my intestines to grow into a 50-foot tapeworm that's makes the thought hard to stomach.

So much for all that protein.

It you don't like bugs (or if you feel sorry for them when they're eaten) don't watch this.
