SNIFFING OUT DANGER

I guess everyone knew this but me.

Some candles are toxic, especially those with paraffin, a petroleum based by-product of refined gasoline. When paraffin is burned, it releases carcinogenic toxins into the air.

Also, some candles have been confirmed to contain substantial quantities of lead in the wicks, which, if used often enough, can saturate your home with poisons.

On top of that, there are absolutely no standards, regulations or laws governing the manufacturing of candles. No agency regulates or oversees the candle industry, and any manufacturer can conceivably put whatever they wish into a candle and not have to label it.

I always thought the Ex was full of it when he said candles, plug-in air fresheners and deodorants can kill you.

I must have been using selective hearing ... as usual.

P.S. Love candles anyway and want to know what else you can do with them? Check out candle dance and nose man.

Where are all these government agencies that are paid to protect us? EPA? FDA? So, where is the list of candles? Bet they would know if there were double martini lunches for free with the list!

Diana,

I have always worried about such things. Outside of the fire worry, I guess why I only burn them for holidays and special dinners. Publish the list of candles.

It's difficult to believe an amateur photographer took these pictures!
BTW, candles also consume the oxygen in the air, but I don't know to what extent. Remember when they took flowers out of a hospital room at night? I wonder if they still do?

Here's an interesting fact. When the Romans built an edifice and the marble was not perfect they
would fix it with wax. The buildings were contracted to be erected without wax. In Latin this is "sine cerus". Hence we still sign our letters "without wax"
Sine Cerus (Sincerely),

Is this a bunch of beeswax! I would of never thought that my candles can harm me, only if I left them unattended (fire) .. that scares me. Even Yankee Candle Co?

You live in New Jersey, the refinery capital of the east coast if not the country. I suspect that this concern with candles is rather trite in the grand scheme of things.
I've got older friends, living in a retirement center in Monroe.Their home resembles the home in the movie,"Carrie" with no less than 50 candles burning throughout the holidays. The ambient temperature of the room was raised by these candles.
Enjoy your candles Diana. It is I suspect much ado about nothing.
I'd be more concerned about the food we intake....nitrates,tranfats,yadda,
yadda,yadda.
Last one out....blow out the candles.

beeswax candles and wicks are perfectly safe...as far as your toxic ones, how about re-gifting to your ex or anyone else on your wish list...we have survived for centuries on so-called unhealthy items/foods/drink, etc. I guess we should all invest in the company that produces those nifty faux candles with electric bulbs or batteries...sorry, have to relight my houseful of paraffin-based candles!

Thanks for the heads up regarding the candles.
I burn them a lot (habit from an ex girlfriend) and my first thought was the impact on my 4-on-the-floor gang.(Cat&dog). So some research is in order. I consider myself fairly astute (many friends and family would happily tell you a stupe) but I've never heard this before so thanks again.

While I'm at it, your blog of 24 January (Perfectly clear) was very touching. As was your comment of 2 February regarding your Mom.
Typically I would light a candle for your Mom's anniversary but (instead), I gathered Ashley and Helina (the 4-on-the-floor occupants) and tipped a sip in her honor from us.

Thanks Bob,
I've tipped more than a sip in honor of her over the past year! Keep yourself and your 4-on-the-floor warm.

Candles are dangerous, causing lots of house fires. It must be a craze because I myself received 2 of them for Christmas.

I would like to know if there is a list of the "good candles" and the "bad candles"

I just received about a dozen of those Yankee Candles for the holidays..and now I wonder how safe they really are. I looked at some sites that say Yankee does not use lead wicks, however the chemical product in the candle it self..how safe is that?
