ON A NEW COURSE

He read my column ... in jail.

I often receive letters from inmates, pleading their innocence and wanting me to tell their stories.

This guy was different, though, because his penmanship was wonderful, and he actually could spell.

Also, he didn't ask me to help him with his case. Instead, he only wanted me to call his estranged girlfriend and tell her he was sorry for stealing a front-end loader and trying to knock her house down. And, he said he thought I had kind eyes.

That was a couple of years ago. Since then, life got in the way, and he stopped
writing.

I got an e-mail from him today.

He's out and back with his girlfriend. He's sober, working and taking one day at a time rebuilding his relationship with God and his girlfriend.

And I marvel at how, in mysterious ways, God shows us he cares.

If you're really such a big fan of God, you shouldn't write "he cares". You should write "He cares."

Kenneth Lay of Enron agrees with you. Today, upon leaving the courthouse after being found guilty, he said "We believe that God in fact is in control and indeed He does work all things for good for those who love the Lord."

Diana, you'd better say 10,000 Hail Mary's, do some charity work teaching troubled youth about proper religious grammar, and just for good measure, convert some savages to Christianity. Then you'd better pray that He forgives you for your sins. By the way, does it say in the Bible that you must always capitalize He when referring to God, or is that in the dictionary or Newspaper Style Guide? Man, I didn't know God was such a stickler for proper grammar. What number is it on the Ten Commandments, just after thou shall not kill and before love thy neighbor?

If you don't believe in God and find that there is no God after you die, you are still dead. If you don't believe in God and find that there IS a God after you die, then you are in deep trouble. So, why not hedge your bets and just believe... forget about those capital letters, whether you do or don't use them...you're still going to die.

Actually, Diana, God does not have to forgive you, he has to forgive the person who didn't teach you the "Proper Heavenly Grammar"!!

So, relax and just pray for that person.

When I had my 16 minutes of fame someone wrote to me . My supervisor did not want me to read the letter. Another colleague received a letter from an inmate too. Must be something about teachers getting letters from prisons. Fortunately, they were not from our former students.
